How to play Connections

Sixteen words sit on the grid in a 4ร—4 layout. Each word belongs to one of four hidden categories โ€” yellow (easiest), green, blue, or purple (trickiest, often involving wordplay or homophones). Tap or click four words you think share a theme, then press Submit. If correct, the row locks in with its category revealed. If wrong, you lose one of four lives. Solve all four groups to win. The trick is the misleading overlap: many words plausibly fit two categories, and the puzzle designer almost always plants a trap.

Strategy tips

Start with the purple group, not the yellow. Purple is hardest, but identifying it removes the trickiest red herrings. Look for words with a clear single meaning first; they're rarely the trap. If you suspect a word fits two categories, save it for last. The "_ball" or "fire_" type categories (compound words) are common โ€” scan for fragments. If you're stuck on three groups solved, the last four are forced regardless of theme.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the puzzle change?
A new puzzle goes live once every 24 hours at midnight UTC. Everyone playing on the same day faces the same grid, so your time and accuracy are directly comparable.
How many wrong guesses are allowed?
Four. After four incorrect submissions the puzzle ends. You can still see the solution but the day's score is recorded as a loss.
What does "one away" mean?
If three of your four selected words belong to the same group but one is wrong, the game tells you. That hint narrows the search dramatically โ€” try swapping one word at a time.
Can I share my result?
Yes โ€” the share button copies a Wordle-style grid emoji summary that shows the order you solved the groups, without spoiling the words themselves.
Is this the same as the NYT Connections?
No. This is an independent free version inspired by the same puzzle format. The categories and word lists are written by the Wordzio team โ€” different puzzles, no paywall.
